You, Me and Gravity

Does the earth go round to please the sun? It never seems to mind.

It keeps shining oblivious, I think you’ll most likely find

With its light and heat abundant reaching out so very far

The Earth basking in its wonder, so adoring of its star

And there’s the moon the only child of Earth never to be weaned

Circling in full view so near us though often partly screened

Demure in its phases, each night a gradually changing view

Until it simply vanishes then cosmically to renew

And on they go, round and round, in such a stunning interplay

The Sun and Earth and Moon what a marvellous display

They move so well together all somehow knowing where to be

Not by choice or great design, a trick called gravity

Keeping to their perfect patterns never drifting out of line

Unable to escape the grip, the force seems so divine

So great does seem the attraction that one day they’ll surely kiss?

No. Gravity’s not like that, it’s a demanding little miss!

Take a look at all the stars above they seem so very still

But actually they’re moving perhaps against their will

Their light gives us a teasing glimpse of our future long now past

And an inkling of the heavens, uncomprehendingly vast

So go on all you galaxies and be on your milky way

Hurtle towards a future in which I’ll have no say

And leave with me my moment safe on Earth is where I’ll be

Revelling in the wonder of all that I can see.

To feel the pull of mother Earth, as she holds us to her skin

Each of us held close seemingly forgiven for our sin

Let’s look beyond her biting winds, and the cruelness of her breath

The agony of her bad days, her tantrums, those pointless tragic deaths

Keep showing us your seasons and hold us safe in your embrace

Remind us all things change and of the challenges we face

My life is just one short moment, a mere twinkle of a star

My home is a planet, in a system of worlds we call solar

For in truth we need the Earth it’s the only home we’ve got yet

We keep on insulting her with every chance we get

To reach our nearest shelter will take one hundred thousand years

So start to treat her better or realise all our fears

The most powerful attraction now felt by the human race

It’s not the force of gravity, although it sets the pace

It’s something uniquely us right outside the physical law

It’s what binds us and conflicts us: our conscientious core

Keep watching those astral bodies in their silent serenade

Aloft in a great ballroom what a spectacular parade

Pondered by all us humans of every shape and kind

Sharing a single question of that we are one mind

As we gaze above in wonder on go our silly precious lives

To be over in an instant what can we surmise?

Not much in reality yet we’ve made a great advance

And almost nearly forgotten what gave us all a chance

I’m loving my fleeting moment as a retched speck of dust

With the sun to shine on me that’s something I can trust

To the ever-changing seasons and the ever-moving tide

And those that I share my life with and others who have died.

Some say life might be out there well we certainly know it’s here.

In every soul that draws a breath that is so very clear

And life is what you think it is: a joy or adversity

It’s the clearness of our mind that guides its enduring quality.

I hope gravity is my friend yet it can so deftly deceive

From what the heavens show us I can scarcely believe.

In space there is dark energy and black holes and nebulas

Things we know near naught about between bewitching stars

And now the gravity of our time is pulling us apart

The way we treat each other is really not that smart

Dark matters of the mind would have us believe in foolish things

So trust in science for it is illuminating

Our issues are just distractions to the overriding fear

That guilt ridden choices betray an instinctive veneer

So we have our gods, our leaders, and the nations that they rule

A false sense of order so the ignorant may be fooled

Man may never change his ways although his mind will inquire on

Battling himself with reason forever and anon

With the world’s weight now riding firmly on our weakening backs

It’s not gravity that has us pinned against the rack.

Could the next discovery explain why dark matter might be?

Is it made from the decay of our society?

I hope that when we find it there’ll still be time for us to act

Unless gravity and the demons have made an evil pact

Still it is amazing to know the things we now know

From peeking through a pin hole for five hundred years or so

Will there come a day when all secrets are finally revealed?

Then will come the time when humanity is healed

That is for the future and great scholars of curious thought

Gazing with a learned eye scientifically taught

Their discoveries bring technologies of which we just dream

Instinctively we know it will take more to again become one team.

So what of us, of Mother Earth, her lone moon and the beaming sun?

Can they lead us by example and stop more damage being done?

Can we see they all need each other although the reasons aren’t yet clear?

Can we learn to live together on this globe we hold so dear?

Billions of us human specks struggling daily to survive

To understand our universe means we’ve forgotten how to thrive.

Gravity is commanding and those poor stars they have no will

Intellect is our strength, our weakness, the promise we must fulfil.
